A Heartfelt Journey with Oma Hedwig
Germany

This ongoing project, which began in 2017, documents the
daily life of my grandmother-in-law, Oma Hedwig, who is
now 95 years old. “Oma” means Grandma in German.

Having grown up in Malaysia, where multigenerational
Living is common; I noticed the cultural differences in how
Aging is viewed differently between Asian and Western cultures.
Although she receives support from my parents-in-law,
Oma values her independence, which reflects a Western
emphasis on personal space.

The project highlights her transition from independence to
using a rollator walker due to mobility issues and mild
dementia. While her desire for independence is admirable,
it can also lead to feelings of isolation. I aim to capture the
emotional complexities of aging through her story.
